Dear Friends, Supporters, and Community Members,
We have some important updates to share with you about the future of A Smile for Kids (ASK). Over the past 20 years, ASK has been dedicated to transforming the lives of under-served children by providing access to orthodontic treatment and fostering a commitment to community service and academic excellence.
We are thrilled to announce that, thanks to our persistent advocacy and the collective efforts of many, the Oregon Medicaid program now includes orthodontic benefits for members under 21 years of age. This new benefit has provided braces to hundreds more children than ASK ever could, ensuring equitable access to orthodontic treatment for Oregon's low-income kids. We are incredibly proud to have played a role in advocating for this change, which marks a significant milestone in our mission to create opportunities for every child to smile with confidence.
As a result of this expanded benefit, ASK's services are no longer as critical as they once were. While we celebrate this progress, it has also made it challenging for us to generate incoming revenue, as the new benefit covers what we previously provided. Consequently, we have decided to transition ASK into a dormant state, continuing our operations only until the last of our 80+ active kids in braces have completed their treatment.
During this transition period, we remain committed to ensuring that our ASK kids maintain their academic standing and fulfill their commitment to volunteer four hours per month at community-based organizations. Diane, our dedicated team member, will manage the remaining casework and compliance on a part-time basis to support these children and ensure the successful completion of their treatment.
We want to extend our deepest gratitude to our historical donors, patrons, and supporters who have been the backbone of ASK for the last 20 years. Your unwavering support has enabled us to achieve remarkable outcomes and make a lasting impact on the lives of countless children. Although our operations will be scaling down, we will continue to monitor and support the ASK kids until their treatment is complete.
Looking ahead, our board will periodically assess the status of ASK and explore future opportunities. While this chapter of our journey is winding down, the spirit of ASK and our commitment to community service and academic excellence live on in the smiles of the children we have helped.
Thank you for being a part of our mission and for your continued support.
With heartfelt appreciation,
Christian Moller-Andersen
Executive Director
